WASHINGTON – Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angles and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued the following statement on the Holy Father’s Urbi et Orbi message today.

Archbishop Gomez’s full statement follows:

“Along with my brother bishops of the United States, I am grateful for Pope Francis’ Urbi et Orbi message today. We join with him in asking God to bless the world and to deliver us from the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think we all understand that we took part today in something historic, as the whole world was gathered together through communications media by the successor of St. Peter, united in one prayer before the living presence of Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Eucharist.

“It was a moving and emotional moment, and I urge my fellow Catholics, and every person of good will, to read and reread Pope Francis’ beautiful meditation. . . .  

“In his message, the Holy Father reminds us that this time of the coronavirus is a call to courage, a call to faith. And as he says, faith does not mean simply agreeing with a set of ideas. Faith means making a decision to entrust our lives to Jesus Christ and to follow his path, to embrace his cross.  

“The Holy Father tells us today that this pandemic is a time for conversion, a time for us to make choices about what truly matters in our lives, a time for us to change the priorities of our societies. It is a time to turn to God and to recognize that no matter how advanced our civilization and technology, we cannot save ourselves. We need God.

“In this moment saints are being made, the Holy Father tells us, pointing to the quiet heroism of ordinary people carrying out their daily duties in extraordinary times, serving one another with kindness and patience. ‘How many people pray, offer and intercede for the good of all,’ our Holy Father observes. ‘Prayer and silent service: these are our winning weapons.’

“So, let us continue to unite with Pope Francis in asking the Lord, through the intercession of Mary our Blessed Mother, to bless our world and to give us the courage to love and serve our brothers and sisters in this time of trial.”

Declaración del Presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal de Estados Unidos sobre el mensaje Urbi et Orbi del Papa Francisco

WASHINGTON - El arzobispo José H. Gomez, de Los Angeles, Presidente de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos, emitió hoy la siguiente declaración sobre el mensaje Urbi et Orbi del Santo Padre.

La declaración completa del arzobispo Gomez es la siguiente:

“Junto a mis hermanos obispos en Estados Unidos, estoy muy agradecido con el Papa Francisco por el mensaje Urbi et Orbi pronunciado hoy. Nos unimos a él para pedirle a Dios que bendiga al mundo y nos libere de esta pandemia del coronavirus.

“Creo que todos entendemos que hoy fuimos parte de algo histórico, cuando todo el mundo estuvo unido al sucesor de San Pedro, a través de los medios de comunicación, en una oración ante la presencia viviente de Jesucristo en la Santísima Eucaristía.

“Fue un momento impactante y emocionante, y yo insto a mis hermanos Católicos y a todas las personas de buena voluntad, a leer y releer la emotiva meditación del Papa Francisco.

“En su mensaje, el Santo Padre nos recuerda que este tiempo del coronavirus es un llamado al coraje, un llamado a la fe. Y como él dice, la fe no significa simplemente estar de acuerdo con un conjunto de ideas. Fe significa tomar la decisión de confiar nuestras vidas a Jesucristo, seguir su camino, abrazar su cruz.

“El Santo Padre nos dice hoy que esta pandemia es un momento de conversión, un tiempo para que tomemos decisiones sobre lo que realmente importa en nuestras vidas, un tiempo para que cambiemos las prioridades de nuestras sociedades. Es un momento para invocar a Dios y reconocer que no importa cuán avanzada sea nuestra civilización y tecnología, no podemos salvarnos a nosotros mismos. Necesitamos a Dios.

“En estos momentos se están haciendo los santos, el Santo Padre nos dice, señalando el noble heroísmo de la gente común que lleva a cabo sus labores diarias en tiempos extraordinarios,

sirviéndose los unos a los otros con amabilidad y paciencia. ‘Cuanta gente reza, ofrece e intercede por el bien de los demás’, destaca el Santo Padre. ‘Oraciones y servicio en silencio: éstas son nuestras armas ganadoras’.

“Vamos a continuar unidos al Papa Francisco al pedirle a Nuestro Señor, a través de la intercesión de María nuestra Santísima Madre, para que bendiga nuestro mundo y nos dé el coraje de amar y servir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en estos tiempos de prueba.”
