Bishop to 8th graders: ‘Shine with your heart’

RALEIGH — By the fall they will be in high school. But for one spring day, 8th graders from Diocese of Raleigh Catholic School gathered at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral.

The annual tradition drew students, educators, chaperones, principals and pastors from throughout the diocese for Mass at 11 a.m. and lunch afterword on the cathedral’s piazza.

The event took place April 28 and was hosted by the Diocese of Raleigh’s Office of Education. Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama presided and shared the homily. He was joined by 11 priests and Deaon Dave Wulff, of St. Michael the Archange Parish, who read the Gospel.

The liturgical choir was combined effort of 8th graders from schools including St. Mary Magdalene, TFS, Immaculata, St. Raphael, Cathedral, St. Thomas More, St. Paul and St. Peter. The choir was led by Jim Wahl, director of music and liturgy at St. Francis of Assisi Parish.

In his homily, Bishop Luis noted how the students are preparing to graduate from 8th grade and leave a place they know for a “new adventure” in their lives. He acknowledged the challenges, such as not seeing longtime friends every day at school anymore, that can go along with that experience.

Bishop Luis thanked the students for traveling to the cathedral.

“For some of you, the journey was short. For some of you, you were able to take a nap,” he smiled, and then noted the joy in gathering together as a group.

“All you have been learning has a purpose. It’s an opportunity to grow as a person,” he said. “Learn with patience. Learn with humility. People are there to help you. Shine with your heart. Be open to learn from Jesus. If you fall, stand up and move on.”

Mass concluded with the hymns Lord, I Need You and I Send You Out. Afterward Marcelo Eureste, superintendent, shared remarks and reminded students to walk with three things: confidence, integrity and, most importantly, faith.
