How they care: Showcase encourages students to draw for the Earth

For the second year in a row, a local group focused on Laudato si’ organized an art showcase for Catholic school students in the Diocese of Raleigh.

More than 600 students from seven schools participated in the event, which was organized by North Carolina Catholics Caring for Our Common Home. Students focused on the theme “How do I care for God’s creation?” The theme was tied to the idea of rights and responsibilities and how that figures into Catholic Social Justice, said Michelle Rose of NCCCCH.

“I chose to have students participate … [because] it is an opportunity for students to think about how they can care for God’s creation, including people and animals, as well as our Earth’s air, water, earth, trees and plants. Students express their own ideas about how they can take action to care for our earthly world through their artwork which helps to develop both their artistic and communication skills,” said Our Lady of Lourdes School’s art teacher, Brenda Giandurco.

Students from Annunciation, St. Paul, St. Patrick and Blessed Sacrament also participated and their instructors shared similar sentiments.

The Visual Arts Department at John Paul II Catholic High School in Greenville took part in the showcase. Teacher Jessica Bradsher said students there focused on theology and art skills to create their pieces.
