When did you first consider a vocation to the permanent diaconate?

When I was in my 30’s I seriously thought about the diaconate, and that started my personal discernment for the ministry. It took me until I was 50 to make the decision and have the diaconate become part of my life.

What is your favorite part of being a deacon?

The pastoral work of the deacon.

What would you say to someone considering the permanent diaconate?

It is a lifelong commitment but also one of the best things you can do. It is spiritually rewarding, and your dedicated service to the Lord will touch people in wonderful ways -- ways that you don’t expect. God is truly at work.

What is your favorite scripture passage?

Matthew 6: 33-34

Who is your favorite saint and why?

St. Monica; there are many wonderful saints, but St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine, demonstrated perseverance in prayer and Christian life asking for the conversion of her son Augustine. In addition, her feast day is on my birthday.
