When did you first consider a vocation to the permanent diaconate?

About 10 years ago and was told that I was too old.

What is your favorite part of being a deacon?

Being able to serve follow parishioners at St. Therese, especially in the absence of our priest.

What would you say to someone considering the permanent diaconate?

You get more blessing out of it than you can give. Giving yourself to Christ is the best thing I have ever done for myself, and I have received so many blessings from it I cannot count. My first year had a lot of ups and downs, but God works wonders through me, so let God work through you.

What surprised you the most about the permanent diaconate?

Being accepted as deacon in the same church I have been a member of for over 30 years.

What is the most joyful revelation you've had about the diaconate since your ordination?

I cannot do anything without God's grace, and he does not expect me to do anything. God just wants me to be open to him so he can work through me.

What is  your favorite  scripture passage?

I have two: Matthew 7:7-8 and Isaiah 62: 4-5.

Who is your favorite saint and why?

That seems to change. St. Francis was because that is my middle name, but right now St. Therese, the Little Flower. The help she gave me during the deacon studies, through my first year with Covid-19  and the loss of my dear pastor, Father Trent. I  pray now that St. Therese will make our little church the example of her and Christ's love for all.

Is there anything else you want people to know about you or the diaconate?

The program is not for everyone. You need to ask God first what his plans are for you. If he places on your heart to at least try, then try. I thought I was too old and could not hear well enough and busy with my civilian job, but just like Moses, he calls those he chooses no matter what your age, education or income. Working for God is the best job I ever had, and it does not even pay me a dime.
