The Monsignor Gerald Lewis Award was initiated in 1992 to honor outstanding educators in the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Raleigh. The intent of the Lewis Award is to honor those individuals who have shown a strong love for and commitment to their chosen vocation.
The Award is named in honor of Monsignor Lewis, who served the Diocese of Raleigh for over four decades as priest, pastor, administrator and outstanding churchman in an era of unprecedented missionary work in the State of North Carolina. Monsignor Lewis continues to give of his time, talent and treasure to his church and beloved adopted state.
Monsignor Gerald Lewis, Vice Chair-Emeritus (ex-officio) of the Lewis Award Committee, studied the life of Saint John while pastor of St. John Baptiste de la Salle Parish in North Wilkesboro, N.C. from 1965-1968.
April 7 is the Feast Day of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, a French priest and the patron saint of teachers of youth. He is considered the founder of the first Catholic schools. This year marks the 300th anniversary of his death.
“I was terribly impressed by his holiness, his patient suffering and his dedication to teaching the poor children of France,” said Monsignor. Lewis. “He persevered in founding the Christian Brothers even though he had no support, in fact much opposition from the local clergy.”
