Position Summary:
St. Peter Chanel exists to see people Fully Alive, Rooted in Christ, Reflecting His Love and Mercy.
The Team Leader of Student Outreach helps bring this vision to life for middle school, high school,
and college students by building a ministry rooted in prayer, relationships, discipleship, and
mission. This person has a passion and desire to see the next generation thrive in their God-given
identity.
This role is not simply about running programs. It is about building a parish-wide culture of care
for young people by recruiting, forming, and supporting adult volunteers who can walk with
students, build trust with families, and help young people encounter Jesus and find their place in
the life of the Church.
The right person will genuinely love young people, listen well, and be willing to adjust ministry
approaches based on what is bearing fruit and adapting approaches to the ever changing culture
around us. This person should be comfortable learning from current research, asking good questions,
and building relationships with parents, parish leaders, schools, nonprofits, and other
organizations serving young people.
The ideal candidate is prayerful, humble, relational, organized, creative, and steady; someone who
can connect easily with young people while earning the trust of parents, volunteers, clergy, and
parish staff. We are looking for someone willing to build, rebuild, listen, adapt, and lead while
continually pointing young people toward Jesus Christ and the life of the Church.
What Success Looks Like
Success will be measured less by how many events the Team Leader runs and more by the health of the
ministry culture being built.
- Keeps prayer at the center of planning, decision-making, and ministry with young people
- Build and sustain a strong team of adult volunteers equipped for relational ministry
- Help students belong, encounter Christ, grow in faith, uncover charisms and place in the mission of the church
- Support and supervise the Coordinator of Student Outreach – so that all age groups have alignment in mindset and approach
- Partner with parents as the primary witnesses and formators of faith in the home
- Create clear pathways for youth discipleship and fostering youth leadership
- Build meaningful relationships with local schools, nonprofits, other youth leaders, and youth-serving organizations
- Host seasonal opportunities for college students during breaks to remain connected to the parish and to one another
- Help the parish continually evaluate what is working, what needs to change, and where the Holy Spirit may be leading next
Qualifications
- Practicing Catholic in full communion with the Catholic Church with a commitment to his/her own prayer and faith life
- Significant experience in training, recruiting, and discipling adult volunteers
- Experience in youth ministry in a Catholic setting
- Experience and knowledge of parish revitalization efforts focused on Evangelization and Discipleship
- Availability to work and/or support a team on weekends, holidays or non-traditional hours
- Growing awareness of effective and current youth ministry trends and models
- Must clear Archdiocesan background check and VIRTUS requirements
Key Areas of Focus
Leadership Development:
- Recruit, train, disciple volunteers into various teams for student outreach
- Collaboration with Middle School Youth Minister, executing and evaluating strategic plan for Student Outreach
- Create a culture where volunteers are not merely helping with events, but sharing in the mission of relational discipleship.
- Cultivates a supportive partnership with parents of teenagers as they pass on the gift of faith
- Involve clergy in events, providing clear direction/training for their active involvement
Relational Ministry:
- Lead the vision, planning, and execution of high school ministry.
- Create consistent opportunities for high school students to gather, pray, build friendships, ask honest questions, and grow in faith.
- Oversee high school offerings such as Sunday night gatherings, small groups, retreats, camps, conferences, mission trips, service opportunities, summer events, and teen leadership formation.
- Ensure that high school ministry includes teachings in line with the Catholic church
- Help students see the parish not simply as a place they attend, but as a spiritual home where they belong and have something to offer.
- Walk with high school teens involved in sacramental preparation in coordination with the appropriate parish staff.
- Offer practical support for parents as they navigate culture, technology, relationships, anxiety, busyness, and family life.
- Create opportunities to listen to parents and better understand the needs of families.
- Develop a small parent advisory group or parent support team to strengthen feedback and collaboration.
- Create seasonal opportunities for college-age students to remain connected to St. Peter Chanel during breaks.
- College Students
- Develop simple, relational gatherings during key seasons such as Thanksgiving, Christmas break, and summer
- Collaborate with the parish’s Young Adult Ministry to build natural bridges for college students.
- Help college students feel remembered, supported, and still part of the parish family.
Local Community Outreach:
- Build relationships with local non-profits, organizations, schools (both public, private and Catholic), and local youth ministers
- Build relationships with campus directors at local colleges
- Grows in knowledge of current trends in youth ministry, overall youth culture, evangelization, networking opportunities, Archdiocesan efforts and national training.
- Continually evaluates, with direct support, the responsibilities of this position to meet the needs of youth
Parish Integration:
- Serves as a member of the Outreach Team, participates in staff prayer and formation
- Collaborates with Pastor, leadership team, staff and ministry leaders to engage teens and advocate for their involvement in various aspects of parish life
- Aiming to integrate young people into the larger church community and encourage their active participation (service, hospitality, liturgy, parish events, leadership opportunities, and outreach efforts).
- Networks with parish ministries for collaboration on projects or opportunities for young people
- Contribute to parish-wide events or initiatives to ensure inclusion of young people
- Share stories of what God is doing among students in a way that builds parish-wide awareness and investment
