Dr. Reinhardt Huetter, a distinguished visiting professor of Catholic Theology at Duke Divinity School, recently gave a special presentation at the Catholic Center for diocesan clergy and staff. Renowned for his expertise in systematic and philosophical theology, Dr. Huetter explores themes such as faith and reason, the doctrine of God, theological anthropology, and the legacies of Thomas Aquinas and John Henry Newman in his work at Duke.
Dr. Huetter was appointed by Pope Francis to the International Theological Commission and contributed significantly to the Commission’s recent work commemorating the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, which was the primary topic of his discussion to the diocese.
Dr. Huetter emphasized the ongoing relevance of the Council of Nicaea's teachings in shaping modern Catholic doctrine and explained that the council's establishment of core Christian doctrines continues to guide theological discussions and Church teachings today.
He also discussed the integration of faith and reason as a cornerstone of theological anthropology and highlighted that Thomas Aquinas provides a framework for rational theology, while John Henry Newman's focus on conscience offers a personal approach to faith.
