APEX - St. Ha-Sang Paul Jung Church welcomed Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama for his first visit to the Korean parish Feb. 23. The day was filled with faith, fellowship and celebration as 26 individuals, ranging in age from teens to parishioners in their 70s, received the sacrament of confirmation.
Prior to Mass, Bishop Luis met with all the confirmands, offering words of encouragement and spiritual guidance. The Mass commenced at 10:30 a.m., with Father Jim Sabak, O.F.M., assisting Bishop Luis, alongside the parish pastor, Father Matthew Park, who came from the Archdiocese of Seoul, Korea.
The liturgy was elevated by members of the Korean choir, whose harmonies enriched the sacred atmosphere, and the children's choir, which shared a special song for the bishop and brought smiles and laughter to the congregation.
During his homily, Bishop Luis delivered an inspiring message about embracing one’s true self and the experiences of living as a minority in the community. He emphasized that being part of a small community is not a disadvantage but an opportunity for deeper connection and mutual care. He also reassured the congregation that being bilingual is a blessing and should be embraced with pride, as language carries culture and identity.
Bishop Luis encouraged everyone to strengthen their connection with God through prayer. He pointed out that while many claim to lack time for prayer, they still find time to text loved ones daily. He reminded the faithful that humans are not made with chips but with warm hearts meant for connection and interaction.
After Mass, the parish community gathered for a reception of homemade dishes, such as Korean-style sandwiches, tiramisu and cookies made with eight different types of oats and nuts, along with pistachio madeleines. The warm hospitality and delicious food reflected the strong sense of unity and love within the parish.
Father Matthew Park prepared and organized the ceremony, ensuring its success. Sun Hwang, president of the parish council, extended a heartfelt welcome to Bishop Luis and Father Jim, expressing gratitude for their presence and spiritual leadership.
