Vatican warns against division in guidelines for social media use

The Vatican's Dicastery for Communication released a 20-page document titled “Towards a full presence” that provided guidelines on how social media ought to be used among Christians.

It also warned against the use of the apps for fake news and the creation of division among the Church.

The Vatican reminded that communication on social networks requires caution, something the pope has spoken about on previous occasions.

"Do not be content with being skilled in the use of social networks to communicate," Pope Francis said. "Only if you allow yourselves to be transformed by the Word of God will you be able to communicate words of life."

While commending those who show their faith online, the document also emphasized that Christians should be “reflective, not reactive” when using social media.
