Walking the walk to aid those in need

St. Ann St. Vincent de Paul Society sponsored a Friends of the Poor 5K Walk/Run on October 5, 2024. This was also the first walk in the state of North Carolina. This nationwide event raises awareness of the challenges faced by neighbors in need.

At over 200 walk locations across the country, more than 20,000 Vincentians, parishioners, families, and friends join to support the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Annually, over $3.4 million is raised each year. The St. Ann St. Vincent de Paul Society aids those in need in our surrounding communities in Northeastern NC. The goal of the walk is to call attention and raise awareness of the needs of the poor and raise money to assist our neighbors with basic needs including utilities, food and shelter in Chowan, Bertie, Washington, Tyrell, and Perquimans counties.

Beginning at St. Ann Catholic Church, the course took walkers through the streets of historic downtown Edenton. There was a post-walk brunch, participation bags, and face painting for children.

There was no registration fee, but walkers were encouraged to donate to the St. Ann St. Vincent de Paul Society. Walkers who donated $20 or more received a Friends of the Poor T-Shirt.

We were excited to have over 100 walkers. In addition to showing love and solidarity to our neighbors in need, we exceeded our fundraising goal. Nine local corporate sponsorships were critical to helping us meet our goals.

Now in its 17th year, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s Friends of the Poor® Walk/Run is an annual event that provides local Vincentian Conferences and Councils with an opportunity to raise funds and awareness to support neighbors in need.

St. Ann SVdP will hold the 2nd Annual Friends of the Poor Walk/Run in September and would love to have you join us.
