Schools helping schools: Raleigh Catholic schools pledge over $68,000 for hurricane relief

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Raleigh have collectively pledged more than $68,000 to support schools in the Diocese of Charlotte affected by Hurricane Helene. This generous donation aims to assist fellow educational institutions in their recovery efforts following the devastating storm.

Hurricane Helene, which made landfall last month, caused significant damage to several schools in western North Carolina, disrupting education for thousands of students.

Although the damage varies from school to school, items such as religious icons, classroom materials and library media are of particular concern. The financial support from Raleigh's Catholic schools will help their counterparts in Charlotte repair damaged facilities, replace lost equipment and ensure students can return to their classrooms as soon as possible.

Lytia Reese, superintendent of the Diocese of Raleigh’s schools, expressed her pride in the community's response.

"Our schools have truly embodied the spirit of Christian charity and solidarity. This donation reflects our schools' commitment not just to education, but to supporting others in times of need. We stand united with the Charlotte diocese as they work to rebuild and recover," she said.

The fundraising effort was a collaborative initiative involving students, parents and staff from across the diocese. The overwhelming response highlights the strong sense of community within the Catholic school system in North Carolina.

In Goldsboro at St. Mary Catholic School, the message was “every little bit makes a difference.” The school community raised more than $500 and collected boxes of books, toothbrushes, toothpaste and socks for the effort.

Officials from the Diocese of Charlotte expressed their gratitude for the generous effort, emphasizing how the donation will significantly impact their recovery. The funds will be distributed among the most affected schools, prioritizing essential repairs and educational continuity for students.

This act of generosity serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community support in times of crisis. As the Charlotte schools begin their journey to recovery, they do so knowing they have the heartfelt prayers of their fellow Catholic educators across the state.
