On Sunday, August 17, 2025, Catholics will hear the powerful Gospel reading from Luke 12:49-56, where Jesus declares, “I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! ... Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division….”
According to Bishop Luis Zarama, this passage challenges us to confront the transformative and often divisive nature of Jesus’ message.
Jesus speaks of bringing “fire” and “division” rather than peace, a stark contrast to the comforting image we often associate with him. This fire represents the purifying truth of his teachings, which demands a response. Bishop Luis explains that accepting this truth is not easy—it sparks an inner struggle, dividing us within ourselves as we grapple with our resistance, both conscious and unconscious. We long for the love and sacrifice Jesus offers, yet we often reject it, Bishop Luis goes on to say that the Gospel reminds us that embracing Jesus’ message requires surrender to God’s grace, allowing him to take charge. Through this surrender, we find the courage to love and serve others, even in the face of rejection.
As we reflect on this Gospel, let us ask for the grace to accept his truth fully, trusting that it leads to love, sacrifice, and ultimate unity in him.
