'One foot in Heaven': Bishop inspires students during visit to ECU Newman Center

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, Bishop Luis Zarama joined Chaplain Father Ian Van Heusen in celebrating Mass at the ECU Newman Center in Greenville. With the fall semester well under way at East Carolina, the Wednesday evening Mass and dinner provided faith and fellowship for a large crowd of students and community members.

During his homily, Bishop Luis spoke of St. Teresa of Avila, whose feast day was being celebrated. He noted that she lived, “with one foot in heaven and one firmly on the ground” and noted that, while she had extraordinary union with God, she never lost sight of the concrete realities of daily life. Bishop Luis encouraged the students to bring their faith into their daily life and to live it in the present. He especially encouraged them not to live in “the cloud” of social media and unreality.

Following Mass, those gathered were treated to a delicious meal of tamales and desserts. Bishop Luis was able to visit with attendees in the common room of the ECU Newman House and with those seated at picnic tables and Adirondack chairs on the beautiful grounds surrounding the house.
