New faith formation program launched to strengthen youth belief

The Diocese of Raleigh kicked off an innovative faith formation pilot program led by Father Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. Father Spitzer is a Jesuit priest, philosopher, theologian, and founder and president of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith and the Spitzer Center for Visionary Leadership. The program he introduced, offered free to parishes, missions, schools, and campuses throughout the diocese for the 2025-2026 school year, aims to address the primary reason for youth disaffiliation from the Church: the perceived conflict between science and faith.

The kick-off event was attended by leaders from 16 parishes, including youth ministers, catechists, directors of religious education, deacons, priests, and youth leader volunteers. Father Spitzer outlined the program curriculum, which is designed to complement existing confirmation and catechism programs and covers compelling topics scientific evidence of Jesus’ passion and resurrection from the Shroud of Turin, and evidence for the Church from studies of Eucharistic and Marian miracles.

Father Spitzer highlighted the program’s proven impact, citing the ARK Survey (ARKtest.org), which showed a 42% increase in high school seniors’ belief levels—from a D+ (67) to a B (83)—after a similar course.

Leticia Ortega, coordinator of Ministry Formation for the Diocese of Raleigh, shared, “I can’t help but think how impactful this kind of formation would have been in middle school. It would have strengthened my faith and shaped me into a better person.”

Father Spitzer responded, “It’s never too late. Now, as leaders, we have this powerful resource to guide our young Church. Providing the youth with these videos and resources can help save their faith for a lifetime!” he emphasized.

The Office of Evangelization and Discipleship (OED), currently supporting high school youth ministry pilots in four diocesan locations, sees the Magis Center’s resources as a valuable complement to their efforts. Parishes are encouraged to integrate the program at the start of their regular curricula to maximize its impact. For more information, contact the OED or visit the Magis Center’s website.
