Former Belmont Abbey College President Dr. Bill Thierfelder recently received the Saint John Henry Newman Award from the Cardinal Newman Society, a national organization dedicated to promoting and defending faithful Catholic education.

Belmont Abbey President Dr. Jeffrey W. Talley announced the honor in a letter to the college community, praising Thierfelder's more than two decades of leadership and the lasting impact of his presidency.

"Bill led Belmont Abbey College through remarkable growth and transformation," Talley wrote, citing the expansion of academic programs, construction of five residence halls, significant campus improvements, a successful $150 million capital campaign, renewed Catholic identity, and stronger community partnerships during Thierfelder's tenure.

Talley also recognized Thierfelder's wife, Mary, for her contributions to campus life, noting her devotion to Our Lady, Help of Christians, and her efforts to foster a sense of family through campus gatherings and hospitality.

The Cardinal Newman Society's Saint John Henry Newman Award recognizes individuals whose leadership has advanced the mission of faithful Catholic education. In his letter, Talley also thanked the organization for its ongoing work in supporting Catholic schools and colleges.
