Father Pedro Manuel Moñoz, O.F.M. Cap., parochial vicar at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Southern Pines, died late last week in Southern Pines. He was 56.
He was born March 17, 1970 in Bogotá, Colombia to Victor Manuel Munoz and Ana de Dios Munozhad. He graduated from the Pontifical Javeriana University in Bogotá, where he studied theology, and was ordained to the priesthood March 22, 2003.
Father Pedro, or Padre Pedro as he was best known, will be remembered for his devotion to the Eucharist and quiet spirituality. He served in Colombia, where he worked most recently as a university chaplain, Spain, where he served in 2007 at a parish in the town of Totana, and the United States.
During his tenure in the Diocese of Raleigh, he served at Holy Family Parish in Hillsborough (2014 – 2015), Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh (2016 – 2020), Infant of Prague in Jacksonville (2020 – 2023) and St. Paul in New Bern (2023 – 2025).
News of Father Pedro’s passing was met with an outpouring of love and sadness on social media, with many leaving comments about his humility, welcoming nature and presence at Eucharistic Adoration, especially leading people in the Divine Mercy Chaplet. Many noted his accompaniment in their lives, especially through the sacraments.
At parishes where he was part of the community, including Infant of Prague and St. Paul, people were visibly moved when his passing was announced at Mass Oct. 11.
In a 2020 video message he recorded for members of Cathedral Parish on the occasion of his move to Jacksonville, he reminded people that he entrusted them to God and “to his Word, which carries his grace, and has the power to build you up … so that you may be holy as God wants you to be.”
