Encouraged by parishioners, local priest pens book

Father Fernando Torres has a rich history of writing and serving his community. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, he began writing, often with poetic reflection, at a young age. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1985, and his unique writing style would later shape his ministry.

Father Fernando's journey with the English language unfolded through the celebration of Mass in small towns in North Carolina. His weekly reflections not only aided in his language acquisition but also became the foundation of a significant body of work.

He contributed to NC Catholics magazine by writing a column during the publication's early years. He also worked on La Voz Católica, a Spanish language radio program. However, it was the encouragement of his parishioners, especially at St. Bernadette Church in Fuquay-Varina, where he formerly served, that led him to compile his writings into a book.

During a sabbatical in Rome last year, Father Fernando found the inspiration and time to honor this request, resulting in his first book in a series: "Let’s Enter the Church."

Now pastor of St. Therese Parish in Wilson, Father Fernando recently shared insights into the genesis of his book. He recounted how his journey began on a local Spanish radio show where he needed to fill time after each program. This led to the creation of weekly poems that ultimately covered the liturgical year in cycles A, B and C.

The transition to English came with its challenges, but Father Fernando persevered, driven by his parishioners' desire for his message to reach a wider audience. A setback with a lost file prompted a determined effort to recover and reconstruct his writings.

Father Fernando emphasized the book's relevance in today's context. He highlighted its purpose in preparing individuals to listen and celebrate the mysteries of Christ. He urged readers to be open and receptive, emphasizing the importance of encountering God's word.

He further explained that the book serves as a form of prayer, a guide to understanding the readings, and a means to engage with the liturgical year. Each reflection is an invitation to deepen one's relationship with Jesus and receive his teachings.

Father Fernando shared personal moments from his writing journey, particularly cherishing his reflections on Our Lady. The enduring traditions and expressions of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary have been a profound source of inspiration for him.

Known as the Father of the Hispanic Celebration, Father Fernando wears that title as a badge of honor. It was earned through his pioneering efforts in organizing one of the inaugural celebrations in the diocese, aimed at unifying the Hispanic community.

As the Church celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, spanning from September 15 to October 15, a rich number of events and activities unfold. These moments stand as a tribute to the extraordinary cultures and the monumental contributions of immigrants from Spain, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Father Fernando serves as an example of the invaluable contributions Hispanics bring to our shared community. His journey and dedication are a testament to the immense value they add to our shared faith experience.
