Cathedral hosts Blue Mass

RALEIGH – Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral hosted what’s known as a Blue Mass on Sunday, Sept. 30 during the 10:30 a.m. celebration.

It was an opportunity for the faith community to honor first responders, such as police officers, firefighters and those who work in emergency medical services. More than 30 first responders in attendance received a special blessing, and others watched via a live stream of Mass. Afterward, a reception was held on the piazza, where children were able to see some of the vehicles and equipment first responders use to do their work.

Monsignor David Brockman, pastor and rector of cathedral, celebrated the Mass and was joined by Deacon Mike Alig, of cathedral, and Deacon Dave Wulff, a retired major of the Cary Police Department.

For Monsignor, the event held particular significance this year as he was in a serious car accident in Cary and received assistance from first responders. He spoke of his appreciation in the homily.

The Blue Mass is a tradition in Catholic churches in the United States; it dates back about 90 years. It’s often held on or near Sept. 29, which is the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel, patron of police, when it does not fall on a Sunday.
