Bishop visits St. Peter School in Greenville

Our school, St. Peter in Greenville, was blessed with a visit from Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama on Friday, May 2. We celebrated Mass as the first event of the day. Bishop Zarama shared a story in his homily about one of the times he met Pope Francis. He recounted how Pope Francis, in his humility, served his interpreter a glass of water during a very long meeting, rather than serving himself. The Mass was truly beautiful, with student lectors and songs from our school's two choirs—the Grace Notes and the Treble Cats.

Bishop Zarama's visit continued to the playground after Mass, where he blessed the new structure that was installed last summer. To the delight of the third, fourth and fifth graders who were on the playground, Bishop Zarama also tested out the students' favorite feature: the slide!

After the blessing and testing out of the playground, Bishop Zarama joined Principal Debbie Sommer and Father James Magee, pastor, inside the school to visit with students. Our sixth graders had the opportunity to ask the bishop questions about his childhood, his call to the priesthood, how he found out that he was named a bishop and what he does in his free time.

Bishop Zarama spent time in Mrs. Thorell's PK4 class in the morning. His visit with the children was precious, and his love for the children was clear to all. Bishop Zarama sat with the students, telling them about his cross and his hat, and engaging in the sweetest conversations. The students also showed the bishop how they pray before lunch, and it was truly special. Bishop Zarama explored the Atrium where Mrs. Kennedy teaches the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. After that, Father Magee and Principal Sommer showed Bishop Zarama where the new PreK building will go. It was a busy visit, and our entire school community is so grateful!
