Bishop emphasizes personal connection in sacrament of confirmation

In a recent visit to a Holy Family Catholic Church in Hillsborough, Bishop Luis Zarama continued to highlight the importance of building a personal connection with confirmation candidates. Before the sacrament, he met with the more than 40 young people being confirmed, introducing himself and inviting their questions about faith, the Church, and his role.

“It’s a sign of respect,” he said, noting that these interactions help him tailor his homily to resonate with each group’s unique dynamics.

During the Confirmation Mass, Bishop Luis always emphasizes the Holy Spirit’s transformative gift, encouraging candidates to embrace its presence in their lives despite busy schedules and to see the sacrament as a beautiful opportunity to explore who they are.

Afterwards, Bishop Luis engages in what he calls the “apostolate of the picture,” spending time with families for photos and brief conversations. While lighthearted about the lengthy photo sessions, he sees them as a chance to connect closely with his flock, planting seeds for a deeper appreciation of the Holy Spirit’s role in their lives.

As confirmation season continues across the Diocese of Raleigh, confirmation Masses are in Mount Olive, Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, among others this month.
