Position Summary:
The Music Director will oversee all aspects of the liturgical music of the parish. The Music Director will work with the pastor and clergy, assistant choir directors, parish and school staff, and parishioners to provide meaningful music for Masses and liturgies that enables active congregation participation while honoring the parish’s music traditions.
Key responsibilities:
- Plan music and approve appropriate for Masses/liturgies through collaboration with clergy and staff
- Direct Schola Cantorum choir (11:15 am Sunday) and Chelsea Chimes (handbell choir)
- Serve as the accompanist for Saturday evening 5:15pm Mass, Sunday 7:30am Masses, for any weekday Solemnity Masses and for other Masses as needed.
- Lead a larger combined choir and instrumentalist ensemble for Holy Week/Easter and special event Masses
- Plan music for weddings and funerals and serve as accompanist or cantor unless alternative arrangements made
- Handle administrative details including musician scheduling/recruitment, music instrument/equipment maintenance, subscription maintenance, budget management
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum level Degree/Education: Bachelor’s Degree, Music Discipline
- 3+ years in church music leadership
- Piano proficiency and accompaniment ability
- Thorough knowledge of Catholic teachings/practices and of Catholic liturgical guidelines/norms
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work with many forms of music including traditional, contemporary, Spanish-language, and age-appropriate music
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic music notation software
- Employment is contingent upon passing a background and reference check; must complete Diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in music discipline a plus
- Organ accompaniment ability desired, but not required
- Spanish fluency
Supervises: Assistant choir directors, accompanists/musicians, cantors and music library volunteers
