Position Summary:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh is seeking an Athletic Director and Physical Education Teacher to join the Cathedral School in Raleigh, NC. 

Since its founding in 1909, Cathedral School has played a dynamic role in the North Carolina educational community in Downtown Raleigh, NC and is also an integral part of the education ministry of the Catholic community of Holy Name of Jesus Parish. It was the first school in North Carolina to educate Native American children.  It was also the first Catholic School to integrate when high school students from St. Monica’s School began attending Cathedral School in the 1950’s.  Even today, Cathedral School is recognized as the hallmark of ethnic and racial diversity among Raleigh’s private schools.

In addition to its commitment to cultural and ethnic diversity, Cathedral School continues to maintain a valued tradition of academic excellence.  Faculty and staff are dedicated to providing a challenging, yet positive, learning environment to support the academic, technological, and social preparedness to each of their 245 students in Grades PK - 8.  

Key responsibilities:

Physical Education Teacher

  • Prepare/set up athletics offices prior to the first day of school.
  • Set up equipment prior to class.
  • Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Prepare and implement lessons plans, providing appropriate learning experiences for each student.
  • Establish and enforce rules of conduct; supervise students in the classroom, or outside on the blacktop or athletic fields.
  • Participate in school-wide behavioral programs, document student behavior and make necessary referrals.
  • Demonstrate skills being taught; assist students in performing skills.
  • Teach safety rules related to each activity.
  • Assess fitness levels; perform fitness testing twice a year.
  • Research, and order physical education and recess equipment.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate field day; develop activities; set up for activities.
  • Monitor and evaluate student skill levels and outcomes.
  • Maintain student records following established procedures and practices.
  • Prepare interim progress reports and report cards.
  • Prepare information sheets for participation in parent-teacher conferences.
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • May plan and supervise field trips following established procedures.
  • Serve on special committees and fulfill responsibilities of a committee member.
  • Attend planning meetings, team meetings, staff meetings, data meetings, and other meetings of groups according to membership in those groups.
  • Monitor use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attend in-service training and diocesan workshops.
  • Prepare lesson plans and materials for substitute teachers; include class lists, and any special instructions related to students’ special needs.
  • Create emergency lesson plans as required.
  • Maintain regular, on-time, attendance.
  • Knowledge of emergency plans for the school, such as lockdown procedures.
  • Participate in fire drills, as required.
  • May be asked to become involved in community initiatives, such as Jump Rope for Heart, or other fitness related community activities

Athletic Director

  • Responsibilities of Athletic Director will include but are not limited to: 
  • Providing leadership to all participants in Cathedral School Athletics
  • Adhering to the by-laws of the TCSAC (Triangle Catholic Schools Athletic Conference)
  • Ensuring that all required physicals, forms, and paperwork for student athletes are up-to-date and current. 
  • Encouraging and maintaining the proper balance between athletics and academics through the implementation of a student athlete policy to be created in coordination with Administration.
  • Scheduling all practices and games, including securing places to play as well as referees/officials needed.
  • Providing team rosters, schedules, and directions to the front office and the principal.
  • Securing coaches with input from Administration, ensuring that they are SET certified as required by the Diocese of Raleigh.
  • Providing schedules and directions to coaches and ensuring appropriate and timely communication to both participants and parents/guardians.
  • Maintaining financial records and complying with the allocated budget for the athletic program.
  • Providing up-to-date information to be posted on the school website and social media accounts.
  • Providing equipment, first aid kits, AEDs and scorebooks to coaches.
  • Delegating additional responsibilities to coaches, team volunteers, and others pertaining to uniforms, equipment, forms, and sports banquet.
  • Providing leadership for the Shamrock event.
  • Keeping Administration informed of the programs with frequency.
  • Collaborating as necessary with other athletic directors and members of the TCSAC

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or a related field.
  • 3+ years of teaching previous experience required.
  • Current NC licensure or an out-of-state equivalent.
  • Employment is contingent upon applicant satisfactorily passing criminal background and reference checks.
  • Must complete diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with all stakeholders in the school community.
