On Saturday, May 21, Cardinal Gibbons High School’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams each captured 4A State Championships over Lake Norman High School (Mooresville, NC). The games were played at Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary.
Saturday’s 14-8 victory over Lake Norman marked the third consecutive year the men’s program won a state championship, and the first year the program won it in 4A. (Gibbons previously participated in the NCHSAA as a 3A school.)
For the women’s team, which defeated Lake Norman 18-14, it was the team’s first state championship. The team, which had an undefeated season, prayed with Bishop Michael F. Burbidge before the title game.
Trevor Kirsch, ’17, was named MVP for the men’s team; Erica Skowron, ’16, was named MVP for the women’s team.
In addition to these two lacrosse titles, Gibbons won state championships in volleyball, women’s golf, cheerleading and women’s cross country during this school year.
Cardinal Gibbons also won the Exemplary School Award from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).
