During the Episcopal General Convention on Saturday, June 27, the legislative body of the Episcopal Church (in the United States) elected North Carolina's Bishop Michael Curry during the denomination's national assembly. Bishop Burbidge responded with the following statement:
Along with all in the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, I extend sincere congratulations to Bishop Michael Curry on being elected presiding bishop of the Episcopalian Church in our nation. I have always admired his joyful spirit and his willingness to dialogue with others.
Bishop Curry’s election is a reflection of his pastoral gifts and his tremendous commitment to the service of others, especially those in most need. His role as presiding bishop will give him the opportunity to serve the Lord in new and exciting ways as a special instrument of God’s mercy and love. I wish him and his dear wife and children much happiness and peace, especially in this time of transition and assure him of a continued remembrance in my prayers.
