Key responsibilities / day-to-day job functions:
The Duke Catholic Center (DCC) is a spiritual home for students at Duke University that creates a welcoming Catholic community; grounded in relationships with Christ in the Eucharist from which growth in the spirit, mind, heart, and actions flow to make Christian leaders in the world set on fire for love of Christ and his Church.
Join the mission by serving in an internship this summer May 22 - August 11, 2023. There are four positions available for ministry, evangelization, music ministry, and development internships.
SUMMER DEVELOPMENT INTERN Responsibilities:
Administration:
- Updates constituent records on a timely basis (address changes, births, additions, deaths, notepad information, codings, segments, ask amounts, etc.)
- Conducts routine database review and corrections to improve database accuracy
- Works on archiving of historical DCC materials (photos, bulletins, etc.) for use in DCC correspondence
- Prepares data for import into database.
- Assist development team with thank you calls to DCC donors.
Content Creation:
- Prepares spiritual content and materials for various donor programs
- Assists in writing donor communication (annual report, newsletters, etc).
Professional Development:
- Commit appropriate time to continue developing spiritually as a Minister of the Gospel. Other responsibilities as assigned
SUMMER EVANGELIZATION INTERN Responsibilities:
Pastoral:
- Actively participate in a Duke Catholic Center Small Group as a leader and work with Small Group Leaders to get to know fellow members.
- Develop relationships with Catholic students by being present for virtual ministry events and other programs.
Digital:
- Coordinate the DCC’s regular social media
- Assisting in the copy-editing, compilation, formatting, and design of Small Group guides
- Write and edit copy for publications, advertising, and weekly student communication.
- Assist with production of the DCC’s podcast series and video content.
- Generate a cache of creative content for the upcoming school year.
- Learn how to manage and maintain a robust database of students and donors.
Administration:
- Actively participate in regular DCC Staff meetings and assist in planning of DCC programming.
Professional Development:
- Commit appropriate time to continue developing spiritually as a Minister of the Gospel.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
SUMMER MINISTRY INTERN Responsibilities:
Pastoral:
- Be present for, participate in, and encourage/invite students to engage in: Sunday Masses, Holy Hour, Brunch, and various catechetical, social and other programs as assigned.
- Act as Sacristan for both Sunday Masses.
- Coordinate the selection, scheduling and oversight of all liturgical ministers for Sunday Masses.
- Develop relationships with Catholic students by being visible on campus and connecting individually with students.
Administration:
- Assists in updating and organizing various databases.
- Coordinate the DCC’s regular social media.
- Research sources for electronic media.
- Generate list of reliable sources for good future content.
- Create database or bank of content (articles, videos, poignant quotes, podcasts, songs, etc.).
- Construct a timeline for sending these out during academic year keeping in mind time off year for students (beginning of school year, exams, etc.) and liturgical moments (Lent, Advent, Holy Days or Saint Feast Days, etc.). Not all content has to be catechetical/faith formation. Inspiring or moving pieces on service, social justice, chastity, prayer, career/vocation, etc. are great too!
- Think creatively about how we can advertise/share Catholic moments/ideas/etc. with the broader Duke community – along lines of banners, bus ads, etc. Create a stockpile of these ideas as well!
- Actively participate in regular DCC Staff meetings and assist in planning of DCC programming.
- Event setup, facilitation, sign-in and cleanup.
- Oversee the life of those living in the Falcone-Arena House.
Professional Development:
- Commit appropriate time to continue developing spiritually as a Minister of the Gospel.
- Check out a spiritual reading book from the DCC library, participate in a Summer Selfie option, or plan something special on your own.

SUMMER MUSIC MINISTRY INTERN Responsibilities:
Pastoral:
- Be present for, participate in, and encourage/invite students to engage in: Sunday and Holy Day Masses; Holy Hour; Penance Services; Retreat Experiences; Tuesday Night Dinner; various catechetical, social, and other programs as assigned.
- Develop relationships with Catholic students by being visible on campus and connecting individually with students.
Administration:
- Update and maintain music library, weekly choir, and orchestra books.
- Prepare all materials for weekend liturgies including set-up and take-down of musical equipment.
- Actively participate in regular DCC Staff meetings and assist in planning of DCC programming.
- Represent the Duke Catholic Center to Duke University, the Diocese of Raleigh, and the general public.
Professional Development:
- Commit appropriate time to continue developing spiritually as a Minister of the Gospel.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Employment is contingent upon applicant satisfactorily passing criminal background and reference checks.
- Must complete Diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training within 60 days of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Pursuit of an undergraduate degree.
- Strong detail-oriented project management skills. A successful candidate will be able to go through large amounts of data in great detail to improve, change or update information for long periods of time.
- Ability to learn new technical computer programs with ease.
- Experience with Excel and/or database systems is a plus.
- Well organized.
Other:
- Practicing Roman Catholic.
- Experience in college campus ministry (as a student) is preferred.
HOURS & COMPENSATION
- The Summer Development Intern has flexible hours as a 40-hour per week position.
- Housing is also provided complimentary for in-person internships at the Falcone-Arena House.
- Monday, May 22 through Friday, August 11, 2023.
