Bishop Gossman to Mark 40 Years as a Bishop
On Friday, September 5, the Diocese of Raleigh will honor Bishop Emeritus F. Joseph Gossman on the 40th anniversary of his ordination as a Bishop. Bishop Gossman will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Cary at 3:00pm. The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, will be principal concelebrant.
Also participating as principal concelebrants will be Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta; Most Reverend John F. Donoghue, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Atlanta; Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte; Most Reverend William G. Curlin, Bishop Emeritus of Charlotte; Most Reverend Victor B. Galeone, Bishop of St. Augustine; Most Reverend John J. Snyder, Bishop of St. Augustine; Most Reverend Mitchell T. Rozanski, Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, Most Reverend William C. Newman, retired Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore and the Most Reverend J. Kevin Boland, Bishop of Savannah. Bishop Boland will be the homilist.
His Eminence William Cardinal Keeler will be in choir.
Bishop Gossman, 78, was ordained a Priest for the Archdiocese December 17, 1955. Pope Paul VI named him to the position of Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese July, 1968 at the age of 38. Bishop Gossman was installed as the fourth Bishop of Raleigh on May 19, 1975. He served until his retirement in June, 2006.
The public is invited to the Mass of Thanksgiving. A reception will follow.
