The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge celebrated Opening Mass for the students, faculty and staff of Cardinal Gibbons High School on Thursday, August 28. This year’s enrollment at the diocesan high school is 1,190 students.

In his homily, Bishop Burbidge called on the students to “Stay awake,” a message given by Jesus in today’s Gospel. The Bishop said the message is “is simply telling you that each day is a gift and tomorrow is not guaranteed.”

Reminding them of the opportunities they are receiving to “live in the Spirit,” the Bishop said “Do not take them for granted. Be vigilant.” He encouraged them to visit the Chapel regularly, engage in learning about their faith and to participate in service projects to help those in need.

Bishop Burbidge said that through these initiatives the students will understand their need for God and their need to entrust their lives to him.
