Education and formation in the Catholic faith is a lifelong, multi-dimensional process (National Directory for Catechesis, USCCB). The Diocese of Raleigh seeks to provide effective support, guidance, training, and leadership for those within the broad scope of catechetical education, in order to provide effective catechesis among the diverse people of God in the 21st century.


  • Assess current programs and approaches, design and propose strategic direction, and implement action plans that will move innovative ideas forward
  • Revitalize and reinvigorate parish directors of religious education and catechists to develop and sustain meaningful and engaging faith formation experiences in order to help people grow in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church
  • Support hands-on professional development of parish directors of religious education and catechists with the aim of strengthening their intellectual and instructional abilities
  • Identify and develop new resources to enhance faith formation at every level, including the use of media and technology, in order to communicate the message of the Gospel in new and exciting ways
  • Utilize technology to enhance opportunities for meaningful communication, including the development of online coursework, webinars, and use of virtual meetings to meet the challenges associated with the geography of the Diocese of Raleigh
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and provide feedback to directors of religious education, making recommendations for curricular adjustments in accordance with specific needs
  • Utilize data to make informed decisions regarding innovation, improvement of instructional learning and engagement, and to set goals for the future
  • Strengthen the quality of religious education by supporting catechist formation, as well as catechetical programs with a focus on the unique populations served in each parish
  • Provide expertise and consultation regarding sacramental preparation programs for children, families, youth, and adults among the diverse people of God, including those with special learning challenges
  • Ensure implementation of Diocesan catechetical policies relating to Catholic formation
  • Serve as a representative for the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership
  • Effectively collaborate with others and supervise projects
  • Manage the process for the Catechist of the Year program
  • Manage budgets related to ministry projects
  • Some travel and evening work required

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Religious Education, or related field
  • Five years of experience related to catechesis and/ or religious education
  • Expertise in current pedagogical methods & best practices, including media & technology
  • Practicing Catholic in good standing
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Theology/ Religious Education or related field
  • Eight years of ministry experience related to catechesis or religious education
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
